As one of the premier surgical training programs in the country, the University of Washington Department of Surgery fosters trainees along their path to independent surgical practice. Residents engage with local, national, and international surgical leaders as they master clinical and technical skills in their respective fields. Drs. Jeffrey Friedrich, Plastic Surgery Residency Program Director, and Kari Keys, Associate Program Director, both have a strong interest in surgical education – not only in the actual teaching of residents, but also in investigating the many ways resident education can be enriched for the benefit of faculty, trainees, and patients. Some of their recent projects have examined issues related to topics such as standardization of microsurgery curriculum, the integration of simulation for fundamental techniques, and resident self-assessment on core competencies.
