Schilling Lecture & Research Symposium
On March 22, 2019 the department will hold its 25th Annual Helen and John Schilling Lecture with distinguished guest Mary Hawn, MD, MPH. Dr. Hawn is the Stanford Medicine Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Stanford University. Dr. Hawn, a native of Michigan, received her education and surgical training at the University of Michigan. Her clinical area of specialty is minimally invasive foregut surgery. She is a funded health services researcher and her projects focus on quality measurement and policy in surgical populations. She is a Director for the American Board of Surgery and serves on the editorial board of Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the American Journal of Surgery. Dr. Hawn has several additional leadership roles in American Surgery including Chair of the American College of Surgeons Scientific Forum Committee and as a Trustee and Treasurer for the Surgical Society of the Alimentary Tract. She is also the co-Editor of a new surgical textbook Operative Techniques in Surgery.
On February 16, 2018 the department held the 24th Annual Helen and John Schilling Lecture with distinguished guest Caprice C. Greenberg, MD, MPH. Dr. Greenberg is a tenured Professor of Surgery and the Morgridge Distinguished Chair in Health Services Research at the University of Wisconsin. She is a surgical oncologist specializing in breast cancer and a health services researcher focused on improving patient safety and quality of care. She was recruited to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011 to serve as Director for the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program. Her multi-disciplinary research program in comparative effectiveness and patient centered outcomes research in cancer care, as well performance and quality measurement and improvement in surgery, has been funded by a variety of agencies, including NIH, AHRQ, and PCORI. Dr. Greenberg is past Recorder and Past-President of the Association for Academic Surgery and Past-President and Founder of the Surgical Outcomes Club.
