All of our preliminary residents are an important part of our community and are treated as equals in the residency program. Our philosophy is that all residents care for the same patients and we have the same expectations for excellent care regardless of their ultimate destination in medicine/surgery. We desire to maximize the educational experience and career potential for each of our residents – whether preliminary or categorical.
We have TWO Preliminary Surgery Programs:
The University of Washington is a world-class facility and one of the top training institutions for graduate medical education in the U.S. We are proud to have an ACS Level 1 Simulation Center with a rigorous curriculum for all of our residents. Our faculty represent many of the Who’s Who in American surgery. As such, your training will be of an exceedingly high caliber. With that said, it is the environment of the Pacific Northwest that makes us truly unique. The regional geographic environment is physically spectacular – and the professional environment of mutual respect and spirit of collegiality and collaboration define our region.
We are proud of our training program as being one of the top in the U.S. and at the same time valuing an atmosphere of camaraderie and high resident morale. We take pride in training residents with diverse interests and future goals and in treating all of our residents equally – whether categorical or preliminary. Our mentorship program will provide you with individualized attention.
The University of Washington is one of the top research institutions in the country and provides a fertile environment for research support and collaboration even during a preliminary year(s). In the Department of Surgery we provide free services for our residents to perform all phases of a research project including: hypothesis generation, study design, data collection, statistical analysis and abstract preparation.
Living in Seattle
Living in Seattle is easy. Except for some rush hour traffic, things are close-by. We have all the advantages of a major city (e.g. professional sports teams, symphony, opera, ballet, and concert series) but in a friendly environment steeped in culture and stunning environmental beauty. With a temperate climate, outdoor activities prevail throughout the year in Seattle, yet you can drive east into the Cascades and be skiing or hiking in 45 minutes. Most residents live within 5 to 15 minutes of the hospital and some bike to work (link to map). All of our hospitals are within 20 minutes of each other.
We know how expensive it is to travel for interviews, so we now offer the option to interview with the Program Director over phone or Skype.
